Consider Collectives\, Cooperatives and Solidarity Economy\n Presenters: Scott Guzman\, Diggers Cooperative\, & Jonah Fertig-Burd\n \nDo you often find yourself saying you’d like to take on an idea for your business/farm or to meet a community need\, but you don’t have the time or resources to do it alone? Are you forming an idea for a way to share resources or cooperate with your neighbors or colleagues? Come to our informal roundtable discussion to learn more about basic shared and solidarity economy approaches\, covering both informal ways as well as formal ways\, including cooperatively owned businesses. You will learn and discuss how others have gone from idea to forming working groups who collaborated and shared resources together\, and created new cooperative businesses together.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Fri 1:00 - 1:50 pm: \n \n \n \n \n \n Local Foods & Local Partners in Cooperation - How strategic partnerships in the food system can address food insecurity.\n Presenters: Ron Adams & Doug Clopp\, Maine Farm & Sea Cooperative\n \nThis presentation will feature and explore how the power of organizational and institutional collaboration can utilize local foods\, strengthen Maine’s food system\, increase revenues for farmers\, and foster cultural inclusion centered on equity. Presenters from the Maine Farm & Sea Cooperative will discuss two collaborative projects that are being implemented in Maine in 2023.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Sat 12:00 - 12:50 pm: \n \n \n \n \n \n Converting Businesses to Worker Ownership\n Presenter: Rob Brown\, CDI\n \nMaine business owners who want to retire or grow their business can sell to their workers\, and there are resources\, financing and successful examples of worker ownership transitions to support them in the process. Hear from Cooperative Development Institute and owners and workers from businesses that are transitioning to worker-owned cooperatives about how it works and how worker ownership can make Maine’s economy more just\, sustainable and prosperous.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Sat 1:00 - 1:50 pm: \n \n \n \n \n \n Pine Tree Power: Owned by Mainers\, For Mainers\n Presenter: Nicole Grohoski\, Pine Tree Power\n \nFrom Fort Kent to Kittery\, our state is defined by folks of every race and class who work hard for one another. From immigrants to Indigenous peoples\, children to caregivers\, lineworkers to lobstermen\, we work together to power Maine. That’s why we deserve a power company that actually works for us. In recent years\, Central Maine Power and Versant were both bought up by giant\, multinational corporations. Instead of working for Mainers\, they’ve been increasing our bills\, standing in the way of clean energy\, allowing dangerous outages\, and trying to divide us with expensive ad campaigns — all while taking hundreds of millions in profit from our communities each year. Thankfully\, there is an opportunity for cheaper\, cleaner power that we can count on. Join Our Power member Nicole Grohoski to learn about the Pine Tree Power proposal\, the opportunity it offers our communities\, and the November election.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Take the opportunity to learn\, connect\, and cooperate at the 2023 Common Ground Fair! – Immerse yourself in interactive and engaging sessions\, designed to enlighten and empower attendees with invaluable knowledge and skills. Expand your horizons as co-op experts and thought leaders share their expertise on various cooperative topics.

SUMMARY:Business Transitions - How Can You Preserve Your Legacy?
DESCRIPTION:How Can You Preserve Your Legacy?\n \n \n \n \n \n Join the Small Business Administration\, Cooperative Fund of the Northeast\, & the Cooperative Development Institute and other guests as we discuss options to consider when it comes time to sell your small business or transition into retirement. \nToo many business owners don’t have a realistic plan for how to exit their business\, earn a decent retirement income\, and preserve the legacy they’ve built and the jobs they’ve created. They don’t understand their options and don’t have time to figure it out on their own\, so they wait until retirement is near to think about exiting their business and are forced to liquidate and close. This shortchanges the owner\, the employees\, and the community when a local small business is lost. \nDuring this event we will be discussing options\, so this doesn’t happen to you! \nNo matter how big or small your business is this workshop will help you understand what you need to know and plan for as you assess the options and plan for your future. We’ll discuss exit planning options with a focus on one of the least understood options – selling to your employees. \nPlease join us for this important discussion! It’s critical as a small business owner that you plan ahead for your own future and the legacy you’ve created with your small business.

SUMMARY:P5 Learning Series: Open Book Management
DESCRIPTION:Open Book Management: engagement\, education and excellence\n\nManagers \nLearn how to increase staff/member/resident engagement in day-to-day operation through sharing financials as a way to show how your business practices and values translate into financial viability or how certain processes and lack of engagement can strain your organization.\n \nCo-op Staff/Members/Residents \n\n\nLearn about ways that can help you engage in your co-op without the frustration or fear surrounding financial information. Engaging in the organization’s/community’s decision making process and understanding how financials are linked to day-to-day activities opens up the opportunity for creative thinking and problem solving\, a supportive and democratic work environment\, and for fostering a strong ownership culture.\n \n\n\n \n👉REGISTER HERE! \nThe impetus for introducing Open Book Management (OBM) is often to bring more transparency and achieve improved financial performance. While these goals are important\, OBM is so much more! Implementing an OBM philosophy is about changing the culture of your business (or community). It’s about management letting go of some of the control\, opening up a dialog\, and drawing employees (or community members) into decisions that can bring about lasting change. OBM is about numbers and finances\, but it’s also about operationalizing the Ends. It’s a way to help every member of the staff recognize how the work they do every day connects to the larger\, long-term goals of the co-op. \nGiving employees the opportunity to engage in thoughtful conversation\, participate in decision-making and be part of setting goals offers them something more than their daily tasks. More importantly\, understanding how those tasks impact the bottom-line can really ignite people’s enthusiasm to do an excellent job every day. Within OBM culture\, the conversation returns time and again to the ways in which everybody’s actions impact sales\, margin\, labor and the long-term success of the co-op. \nIn this workshop\, we will review the potential benefits of Open Book Management and the elements needed for its successful adaptation into a cooperative business model. \nPresenter: Melanie Reid\, Columinate\n\n\n \n \nShare the Registration Link with Friends!\n

SUMMARY:CMBA P5 Learning Series

This is due to current difficulties of gathering and networking during the COVID pandemic. \n \n  \nThe theme for our new learning series is Principle 5: Education\, Training\, and Information\nCooperative Principle 5: Education\, Training\, and Information — Cooperatives provide education and training for their members\, elected representatives\, managers\, and employees so they can contribute effectively to the development of their co-operatives. They inform the general public – particularly young people and opinion leaders – about the nature and benefits of co-operation. \nWe will offer a five part expert-led learning series over the course of five months. The conference will now offer three days of workshops scheduled for October 14th\, 15th\, and 16th from 1 pm to 4 pm. An agenda and meeting information will be provided the morning of each day. You are welcome to attend as many or as few of the workshops as you would like. \nClick on the image to get your tickets \n \n  \nCONFERENCE SCHEDULE\nDay 1\n1:00 Welcome to P6 2020\n1:30 Cooperative Governance in Practice\n2:50 Break\n3:00 ROC Model Preserves Affordable Housing\n4:00 End of Day 1 \nDay 2\n1:00 Welcome\n1:15 Beyond Equity & Inclusion 2:50 Break\n3:00 Beautiful Troubling: Intervening on Racism\n4:00 End of Day 2 \nDay 3\n1:00 Welcome\n1:15 Interacting With the Media 2:50 Break\n3:00 Advancing our Co-op Advocacy Efforts\n3:50 Thank you! \nWORKSHOPS\nOctober 14\nSession 1 — Cooperative Governance in Practice: Managing Your Expert Manager \nPresenter: Thane Joyal (Columinate) \nThis workshop will focus on practical aspects of governance. We’ll use scenario-based learning to illuminate basic skills and strategies to support strong relationships between board and management. Presenters (with help from a few volunteers) will role-play a board meeting at a resident owned manufactured housing cooperative in which management is not fully meeting board (or community) expectations. We’ll focus on the roles of community members in supporting and holding their board accountable; of board members in supporting one and holding one another and their board leader accountable\, and of the board as a whole in supporting and holding their cooperative’s manageable. – Break – Session 2: Stable and Permanently Affordable Housing – Solid as a ROC: How does the ROC model fit into the affordable housing market in Maine? \nSession 2 — Stable and Permanently Affordable Housing- Solid as a ROC: How the ROC model builds and supports the affordable housing market in Maine.\nFacilitator: Jeanee Wright (NEROC)\nGuest: Paul Bradley\, ROC USA President \nHave you ever wanted to know more about the ROC model of cooperatives? How did it get started? What does it mean to be part of a “model” of ROCs? Why is the ROC model so important to the low income housing crisis and a tool in a community’s housing toolkit? In this session we will explore the story of how this movement started\, the state of the movement today and hear from ROC community leaders how cooperative ownership transformed their communities! \nOctober 15\nSession 1 — Co-ops: A Portal Beyond Equity and Inclusion\nPresenter: Suparna Kudesia (CoFED) \nIn this workshop\, we will share a brief history of cooperative practices of collective liberation that BIPOC-led co-ops in CoFED’s network of young cooperators of color (MyceliYUM) embody. Co-ops led by Black\, Indigenous\, People of Color (BIPOC) cooperators have been budding as alternatives for generations in our communities. For us\, the conversation we are in need for is centered around collective liberation and centering the needs\, victories\, resilience\, and joy of our cooperative visions and practices. Participants will leave with a foundation of BIPOC-led cooperative strategies to thrive in a predominantly white-economic infrastructure. BIPOC cooperators will learn how to embody resilience\, joy\, and liberation in our cooperative work and practice through collectivized care\, unlearning internalized capitalism\, and compassion. White cooperators will learn how to move our cooperative spaces towards a decolonized praxis. \nSession 2 — Beautiful Troubling: Intervening on Racism through Liberatory Practices\nModerated by CDI’s Collective Liberation Work Group \nDrawing on the Anti-Racist Principles from The People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond\, this discussion will offer participants an opportunity to move from reflection and assessment to action and accountability in their Cooperatives and communities. \nOctober 16\nSession 1 — Interacting with the Media: How can Maine’s cooperative community better interact with the media to advance cooperative development in Maine?\nPanel: Maureen Milliken (MainBiz)\, Chris Busby (Mainer News)\, Fred Bever (Maine Public)\nModerator: Doug Clopp (CDI) \nThis interactive session will feature three Maine journalists whose outlets have covered cooperative development in Maine. Session participants will learn the most effective ways to interact with media\, what makes a good story\, and what to do\, and not do\, to get our stories of the impact of cooperative development out to a larger audience. \nSession 2 — Connecting CMBA’s Work With the Media to Advance Our Advocacy Efforts \nFacilitator: Doug Clopp (CDI) & Rob Brown (CDI) \nBuilding on what participants learned in Session 1\, participants will explore how we can effectively use and expand our communications capacity and storytelling to educate policy and decision makers to take cooperative development in Maine to scale. In this session we will analyze and discuss ways we can build strategic communications campaigns that are coordinated to advance advocacy efforts at the State House and at our city and town councils. \n\nPlease email emmy@maine.coop if you have a hard time covering the ticket fee. \n— \nPrinciple Six\, one of seven cooperative principles\, focuses on cooperation among cooperatives. This conference provides the opportunity for Maine cooperatives to join forces in building a strong cooperative economy in Maine. This event will help staff\, management\, and boards build governing skills. It will also provide attendees with a networking platform\, highlight advocacy efforts and opportunities\, and bring cooperators together to celebrate the role that co-ops can take in the fight for racial equity. \n— \nThe conference is sponsored by a Host Committee including the Cooperative Development Institute\, Democracy at Work Institute\, Portland Food Co-Op\, Cabot Creamery\, Insource Renewables\, Belfast Co-Op\, Columinate\, and ROC USA. Additional sponsors are Blue Hill Co-op\, Rising Tide Co-op\, Cooperative Fund of New England\, Fedco Seeds\, Town & Country FCU\, cPort Credit Union\, and Maine Harvest Credit Union.
