The Local Food Switchboard: Exploring a Cooperative Approach (Start-up)
The Local Food Switchboard is a new initiative designed to strengthen Maine’s local food system by improving supply web logistics, increasing transparency, and connecting those who need resources with those who offer them. As a virtual hub, the Switchboard will map key infrastructure, products, and services across Maine, with an initial focus on helping schools access more locally sourced food. Currently in its research and design phase, the project embraces a collaborative, “small-c” cooperative-minded approach. By centering the input of diverse interest-holders, the Switchboard is being built around shared ownership, inclusivity, and broad engagement.
This workshop will explore whether the Switchboard could—or should—adopt a cooperative structure to support its long-term sustainability. A cooperative development specialist will provide a crash course in cooperative formation, with an emphasis on membership models and foundational principles. Then, participants will take part in a facilitated discussion and interactive role-play to explore cooperative potential for the Switchboard.
This hands-on session is ideal for cooperative leaders, food system advocates, and business owners interested in the early-stage considerations of cooperative development. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of cooperative approaches and how they might support innovative food system initiatives.
